Let's talk about blisters

We all know the pain. You finish a long run on a hot day. When you peel off your socks, you find those little (or big) blisters that might ruin the rest of your day. So, what can you do about it?

Here are some tips to help avoid those pesky blisters.

  1. Make sure your shoes are not too tight! I would recommend sizing up one full size from your normal shoe size, if not a size and a half. Your toes shoe be at least a thumb nail length away from the front of your shoe. Try on you shoes, and place your thumb on the edge of the shoe. If the gap between your big toe and the edge of the shoe is smaller than your thumb nail, your shoes are too tight.

  2. Try to time your run so you are not running at the hottest time of the day. More heat means more sweat - and the more moisture you have in your socks, the more likely you are to develop blisters.

  3. Grab a jar of petroleum jelly and grease up your toes before putting on your socks. This will help reduce friction and lessen blisters.

  4. You can also dust foot powder inside your socks to help reduce moisture.

  5. Wear moisture-wicking socks (click here for my favorites).

Now, what to do if you already have blisters

  1. Avoid peeling or opening the blister. An open blister can easily become infected. Make sure to keep open blisters covered up with a bandage.

  2. Use blister bandages to help with recovery.

  3. If the blister does open up, use triple antibiotic ointment to help ward off infection.

  4. Try to stay off your feet as much as possible.

  5. Keep feet cool and dry.
